The playground is about building your skills at your own pace - it should suit both the puppies mental and physical condition on that day, and allow for a challenge if they feel like it. There should be plenty of easy fun playground area, so they can practice and gain confidence.
Learning can be this much fun :) Each puppy interacts with the different obstacles as it wants to, social play with each other is important. As they do so often, Kirk and Chekov hang out together, and are joined by McCoy in the pod field. The black rubber pods are simply farm feed tubs, bought at the local farm feed store. Turned over they make great balance pods, or as you can see in the movie supports for planks. The pups love to climb over them - they have some give and they like to try and bite and grab them. Set up as a 'feeder' they make great little wading pools and are perfect for climbing into. Lined up as they are, with different sizes and heights they make a perfect climbing area. The highest one can be used to play king of the castle.
Scotty is busy with the old couch cushion. This one makes a great beginners wobble board; from which they can transition to the wobble air cushion and then a real board that wobbles and makes noises. All help develop balance, body awareness and confidence.
The tarp provides a different surface to move on, it makes a noise when you run on it, and may be a slippery. Learning how to be sure footed on different surfaces is important - we are lucky ;) as our backyard is very uneven, grass and dirt :) Perfect for learning.
McCoy gives the planks a try - he's walked over and along them before - but this time he seems to have trouble figuring out how to get on ;) . So he opts to play a running game with chekov.
Dropping the water dish is intentional - this is a let's all play together phase - which will often change to solitary play or play in little subgroups.
I have noticed that the smaller dogs are more confident on the planks, pods and cushions, though McCoy was third after Spock, to walk down the stairs. As I've noted before the stairs are not just about being agile enough, it is a concept as well, which they need to grasp and work through. Your motivation may well come into play - the steps lead to the kitchen, which equals food ;)
I will be adding more movement and noises to our playground. Some of course is provided by nature, neighbours and traffic, both in the air and on the road in front of our house. Last weekend the farmer was nice enough to plough the field behind us, and several small airplanes could be heard flying overhead. We've not been out in the dark yet, but early evenings usually bring a coyote concert.
