The Beardie and the German Shepherd

It's happening with an alarming frequency. Little German shepherd puppies fall victim to fast running Beardies.

The cause, some say is an overpopulation of beardies in Ontario’s Parks.

Others point out that old attitudes about Shepherds may prevail.  “They should just go away and guard something” is a comment often heard among young Beardie’s,  insiders say.

When contacted, a representative of the Beardie community said:  “That’s just so much fuzzy logic.”

And added: “ I recognize it when I see it”

Young Beardies, he pointed out, are trying to see eye to eye on the subject with young shepherds.

And often express a wish people could see the situation more clearly.

It’s not only the Beardie’s who are responsible. There have been near misses on both sides.

Now one Beardie  community is going one step further: They are introducing the  Guide(-a-Shepherd) Beardie. Outfitted with a special harness, young shepherd puppies can easily recognize them.

To cross the Beardie zone, the puppies can simply grab a hold of their guide dog and be guided to safety.

Ensuring a happy and relaxing play time in the park for all :-)
