Are you ready for a Beardie Puppy ?

Some Practical Considerations

Behold the Beardie puppy, a picture of cuteness and innocence.

Right ;) You will need to devote considerable time to training, grooming and exercising your Beardie. While a sporty hairdo from the local groomer can cut down on time spend brushing, there's no shortcuts to training your dog to be a good companion. To learn well your puppy needs to be excercised regularly, appropriate to its age. Mental exercise needs to be a regular part of this - so take a quick look at our training page to learn more. Make sure you have the time and patience for this energetic breed.

Veterinary Care

Before you can comit to your new companion. make sure you know the cost of veterianary care. Contact local vet clinics and check into the rates for regular exams and emergency care in your area. We do recommend and follow the Jean Dodds Schedule of Vaccines - so please make sure your vet has this information.

Proper Nutrition

There's a number of good dog foods available at reasonable cost from Canadian and US companies, who pay attention to good nutrition and ingredients. We'll be happy to provide you with more information via email and our Health and Nutrition page.

Equipment

You will need a harness - as well as a comfortable collar and lead. The harness can be used both as a safety restraint in the car and for walks. The best harnesses also have a ring on the chest, this is ideal to manage pulling, as your Beardie learns to walk on leash properly .

Crates and Xpens

With this wonderful breed it is a shame not to travel, so teaching your Beardie to be in a crate enhances safety while driving and allows for easy sleepovers at motels. We find xpens great for home use to contain the young pup to a safe area, but rather less than Beardie proof, as this agile breed has produced more than one escape artist. As this may just pass down from mother to puppy ;) we give the pups about 15 minutes before they've figured a way out of the xpen. Mostly they just climb over. :o A crate is ideal as a place for a safe time out for those puppy zoomies.
